5/11/2023 0 Comments Disruption by Jessica Shirvington![]() ![]() Maggie makes a great character, and it’s fun being inside her head and reading in her voice, the way she thinks and speaks. The writing is well-paced and keeps the story moving along nicely. This writing method allows Shirvington to use her lead character’s ‘voice’ to drive the narrative, speaking in colloquialisms and using modern turns of phrase and punctuation to accentuate Maggie’s emotions. The books are written in the first person, from the point of view of the story’s protagonist, Maggie Stevens. Record too many negative ratings though… you get branded a “neg”, and big guys with guns appear to see to it you’re never heard from again. As long as you’re recording positive ratings with people, you’re all good. ![]() The key element of the story is the “phera-tech”… a system that attaches to the M-Band and “rates” the compatibility between two people (expressed as a percentage score), by reading their pheromones. The story is set in a subtly dystopian near future America, where “M-Bands” and “M-Chips” – the next step in the evolutionary ladder from the Smart Phone – are government mandated, measuring, recording and even controlling the lives of every citizen on Earth. ![]() Now imagine that you not only willingly let them do it, but you actually pay them to. Imagine a world where everything you do, every step you take, every heartbeat, every interaction is monitored by government-sanctioned corporations. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() This is an article about a condition and an industry. This close discussion is framed within thinking about the popular music industry's capacity for carelessness, its schedule of pressure and practice of destruction on its own stars, particularly in this instance its female artists. Following such context the article looks in more detail at a small number of popular music artists who had experience of anorexia, their stage and media presentations (of it), and how they did or apparently did not explore their experience of it in their own work and public appearances. The protagonist of The Karen Carpenter Story (Sunday at 9 p.m. It involves contextually thinking about the (medical) history and the critical reception and representation, the place of anorexia across the creative industries more widely, and a particular moment when pop played a role in the public awareness of anorexia. But Karen Carpenter was more interesting, more troubled and more talented than most people thought. I explore the relation between the anorexic body and popular music, which is more than simply looking at constructions of anorexia in pop. This article discusses an extraordinary body in popular music, that belonging to the person with anorexia which is also usually a gendered body – female – and that of the singer or frontperson. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Reading Order Bonuses INFLUENCERS Events. ![]() Bittersweet Memories by Catharina Maura book. I liked you better as the Egyptian goddess. ![]() It's really selfish of the author to have him ruin crows. Crows are cool so I don't think you should ruin them for me. You're so unimportant I don't remember your actually name. Why the heck did you say yes to Nicholas and "awake" Sophie? I mean, where is your common sense? Don't you have any wisdom? ![]() And I don't really get why you hang out with Nicholas. Still, you're 1,000 years old and still have the maturity level of a teenager. You can go die in a hole and then come back to life and dissolve slowly in a pot of acid and then come back to life again to be slowly and maliciously tortured for eternity You should've never existed in the first place. I would like you if you stopped being you. Is it just that in those two days that I was extracted from my world and put into yours, siblings and constant fighting and all the things that go with "brother and sister" was recreated into this perfect world where it's mushy-gushy unconditional brotherly love and nothing else? What I don't get is how you and Sophie never fight. One minute you're an ordinary kid who likes superheroes and doesn't do well in school and then you become this person who has a super computer and uber-nerdtastic knowledge? Whoa, big difference. You could've been a really great kid but apparently, the author just couldn't make up his mind about you. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Fyodor dostoyevsky demons![]() ![]() This form of intellectual conservativism tied to the Slavophile movement of Dostoyevsky's day, called Pochvennichestvo, is seen to have continued on into its modern manifestation in individuals like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Dostoyevsky casts a critical eye on both the radical idealists, portraying their ideas and ideological foundation as demonic, and the conservative establishment's ineptitude in dealing with those ideas and their social consequences. As the revolutionary democrats begin to rise in Russia, different ideologies begin to collide. An extremely political book, Demons is a testimonial of life in Imperial Russia in the late 19th century. ![]() ![]() Although titled The Possessed in the initial English translation, Dostoyevsky scholars and later translations favour the titles The Devils or Demons. ![]() 5/10/2023 0 Comments Aquamarine by alice hoffman![]() Although her characters are sketched well, they are not fully realized and while the language is lyrical (Aquamarine is "beautiful as a pearl" with a voice "as cool and fresh as bubbles rising from the ocean"), the narrative itself spins out in a coolly elegant, detached voice that evokes an adult's ("Maybe. That all changed with Grandma Wombat, with both shelf-dwellers and mini-fleshlings laughing heartily at the antics of one cheeky baby wombat. Now it is no surprise that the shelf loves this series dearly, but we had noticed that the mini-fleshlings in the dwelling weren't taking to some of the books in the series as well as we shelf-dwellers did. It's a wombat adventure featuring rude 'roos, unexpected vehicular transportation and more than a little bias on the part of one very proud (but sleepy-eyed) grandmother. ![]() I received a print copy of this title from the publisher for review.īaby wombat returns in a surprising adventure, while Grandma wombat laments the breakdown of behaviour management in modern parenting. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments Love radio ebony ladelle![]() Bertrand toured and recorded as vocalist with jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers. ![]() Multifaceted recording artist and writer Kathleen Bertrand is a native Atlantan and Spelman College graduate, whose performances have ranged from two Olympic Games to performances before two presidents, as well as appearances at jazz festivals world-wide. ![]() |
